Using Social Media SEO To Your Advantage

by Sean Rasmussen on December 14, 2009

Social Media SEOSocial media is an excellent vehicle for internet marketers that allows people to get in on online conversations, become the topic of conversations, and allows the marketer to direct search engines and traffic to your website. Social marketing isn’t likely to be going away.

The human and social aspect of the web is expected to increase as people become increasingly mobile and want to get and share bite-sized pieces of information with their online social circles.

In reality, there are more reasons to embrace social media than ever. And because social search is something that’s now prevalent online you should use it to your benefit and start blending your social activities with Social Media SEO elements.

Social Media With SEO

By thinking with search engine optimisation in mind as you socialise online, you can get even more exposure through social search engines and through people searching for you. Ways to utilise Social Media SEO include: using tags and hashtags, social bookmarking, and thinking in terms of long tail keyword phrases in your updates. A question you answer on a forum or a Twitter status update could very well end up on page one of a search term that a potential customer has surfed on.

What Is Social Search

Search engines can have aspects designated to social media and social search engines that just search for social discussions. Google social search offers results from your group of friends and friends of those friends. By creating a Google profile, you can gain more exposure for your various online profiles.

By joining sites and participating, you can improve your exposure as well as your SEO. Make friends, tag and categorise your items, and establish trust with others through participating in social circles. This will attract customers and could attract subscribers as well. And, because everything you do online could be seen by others, doing things the right way will optimise every online keystroke for potential income.

Social Marketing Cautions

Because the activities you participate in on your social profiles can be searched on and found online, you need to be aware of the fact that you could very easily be scrutinized by customers and potential customers as well as others in the social sphere. You can influence the industry you’re in either positively or negatively so it’s vital to act with professionalism at all times.

Just like you should SEOize your articles and blog posts, think about utilising Social Media SEO with your social activities as well.

Have a most outstanding day.

Marketing and/or promoting sites through social media is not something that can be overlooked, especially if the site is brand new. Brand new sites have no exposure in the search engines, so pushing it through social channels is an ideal approach to gain exposure and traffic.

I agree with you there Robert, social media is a great way for new sites to get noticed, build authority and generate traffic. Combining SMO with strong SEO will ensure the best chance for high rankings over time.

Social media can be used for marketing and seo in many ways; probably, at this time, it’s one of the best seo environments. The problem is if at a certain moment social media would be suffocated by too much marketing and advertising. Even now when Google announced his own social media network I dare to say that the days of the big social media giants are numbered. I could bring many logical arguments in this sense, though the figures (facebook went over 4 mil users) seems to contradict me. A good marketing goes far beyond social media, if not, when (or if) it the system goes down, the whole marketing is in danger.

Hi Bestseo
There are obviously many more ways to market than just social media, but you would be missing out if you did not harness the power of social media while it is available. In my opinion social media is here to stay, as it has given a voice to the general population and my guess is that they will not give that up easily. So…why not use social media to the best of your ability by introducing some of the SEO that is mentioned in the post, it can only help right? The other thing you should also be doing of course, is working on organic SEO rankings, as high rankings combined with well planned social media strategies are 2 of the big ingredients for online success.

Many webmasters already proven that marketing through social media did something different in their online business. It’s actually one of the most effective way to reach out to your audience. Most importantly, absolutely free.

Effective indeed Gabriel. If you are marketing online and not taking advantage of social media, it’s something that seriously needs to be considered. Now that search engines are taking more notice of social conversations, there are even more reasons to become involved.

Great post Sean, social media probably will play great role and open new opportunities for regional targetting (non-English SEO) as well in near future.

Thanks Belajar, glad you liked the post. I am not up with non-English SEO, but I imagine it is alive and thriving and getting bigger all the time.

Hi Sean,

I need to get much better at Social Media SEO. It would be easy to SEO your updates but it’s not something that I’m thinking about when I’m writing them. I need to start doing it though.

My tweets and my blog comments always end up in the Google search results so I’m really shooting myself in the foot by not capitalising on this. It’s just going to take a little discipline to think before I tweet or post a status update.

Hi Sean

I only started getting involved with social media 12 months ago thanks to you and the YOTA forum. Before that I didn’t even have a Facebook account, in fact I had no intention of getting one and thought it was a waste of precious time.

Now, in my training as an internet marketer extraordinaire, I could not function in business without Facebook as I start branching out into Twitter and other social media sites.

I learned today that I can improve my SEO by becoming a member of other sites and joining in with discussions etc. Now I just have to shift a few things around on my grossly overweight
timetable and become super duper extraordinary!

Blessings,
Elly

I don’t even think about using seo tactics in my social media posts. It makes sense to use your keywords in your updates so you will come up if people are looking for that particular information.

Great post, Sean. I’m so excited to learn about Google Social Search. How long has this been out? More importantly, where have I been??

Fellow readers, if you haven’t already done this, visit the Google Social Search link posted above and watch the brief video. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn how social search can make your life easier… anything from deciding to purchase the iPhone vs. the Blackberry……………… or reading reviews that your friends posted on Yelp about a restaurant that you’re interested in. This is a great way to add the “personal touch” to online researching.
