Do you understand the concept behind trackbacks and how they work in your favour, in terms of SEO? First let’s look at what a trackback is, how it works, and finally, why it works.
Defining A Trackback
Simply put, a Trackback is a clickable link that forms a connection between two or more blogs. For instance, imagine there is a blog post written about a particular subject, say diamonds. In the content, the writer references a good article about diamonds over at a different URL.
The writer fills out the appropriate section in the trackback section of the post. This leaves a link in the comments section to the site where the original article resides, as well as sends out communication to the original article writer that someone referenced his material.
Different blogging platforms work differently. With WordPress, it is a simple procedure that adds a link when you insert the trackback URL. In Blogger, they are referred to as backlinks and you can specify whether or not to show them through the comments tab under settings.
How To Do It: Step by Step
Follow these simple steps to start using the power of trackback:
- Find a blog post related to your content. Make sure you click on the title of the post so that you are viewing only that content, and not the blog site’s main page. In other words, find the permalink URL. This is usually the address of the particular post, often including the date. A permalink simply refers to the address where the content can always be found (since often older blog posts move from the main page to the archives).
- Find, and copy, the trackback URL. This is usually denoted clearly on the page as a trackback.
- Use the trackback URL in your post. Most blogging platforms have a space where you can add it in a section that says “Send Trackbacks to”; paste the URL here.
- When the post goes live, a notification is sent to the first blog post you trackbacked to. This URL appears on your blog post, either as a comment or not, depending on your specifications.
How Do Trackbacks Help SEO?
Trackbacks create another link to content. It can be an outgoing link (in the above example, from your blog to another) or an incoming link (conversely, the first writer’s content gains an incoming link). So both blogs get an increase in traffic.
As a small business owner, you can use trackbacks to create some love between two of your own blogs. Of course, you can always go the traditional route, too, and simply start spreading blog love by reading interesting content and giving it a boost with your own posts. If someone reciprocates, it gives value to your own blog.
As long as you stick with tracking back to blogs which post content relevant to your business and website, then you are increasing your odds of getting qualified traffic. After all, visitors to the two sites are presumably interested in the topic common to both.
Some internet marketing experts feel that Trackbacks simply give away valuable SEO. However, they are a good, white hat way to increase links amongst your own blogs or to give credit to others – who will hopefully do the same for you.
Have a most outstanding day.

Hi Sean,
I haven’t been harnessing the SEO power of trackbacks. It looks like a great way to share the link love between my own sites. It also looks like a great way to give credit to other bloggers whose work I really like without giving up a permanent space on my blogroll prematurely.
I’m just not sure where to find the trackback URL. For instance, where is it on this page, Sean? I can’t seem to find it and I’m hoping I’m not blind.
I notice there is a WP plugin that deliberately seeks trackbacks, as I understand it, by seeking blogs that are on the same subject and allow trackbacks and linking to them multiple times with each new post. I found it under the blue hat section of the SEOBOOK toolbar. Should I use this pingcrawl plugin?

I haven’t tried that one Wal, best to do some research and see what other people are saying if you have any concerns as to it’s effectiveness.. or hat colour
I have many times people talking about being able to generate a mass of backlinks to your site using trackbacks. I just interpreted this as spamming people’s blog to get a link. I see it all the time in my spam comments. Some blog has sent me a trackback and yet we are talking about two completely different topics. For this reason I am a little hesitant to use this technique.

Hi Sean
What a great idea you have presented here. I especially like the idea of being able to create links between two of my blogs, and the fact that using trackbacks can attract SEO
I take into account also what Cemil mentions about not trackbacking to a blog that is about an entirely different subject. I would have thought you could be discerning about this and have control over where they go to?

I was never aware of the SEO power of trackbacks, Sean, so I’ve never used them. I think I’ll experiment with them between some of my own blogs just to see how to do it properly. As you mention, it is a good way to possibly build up some good will amongst bloggers.

Hi Sean,
Thanks for the tips on the SEO power of trackback’s as I have incorporated some of these tips into one of my blogposts.
I too have seen a trackback plugin for wordpress but am yet to actually use it : )
I have heard of linking between sites and I do use that, so now I ask is linking and trackbacks the same thing or two different strategies ?
Hi Sean,
Finding sites that have similar content to my blog is important. With one blog I have I think this is a little hard. That’s due to the fact that there’s little information on the niche topic I have chosen. (Common Law)
I’m not sure if having no comperition is a good thing. If I create a similar site with and with trackback and I link the two blogs together. This may be an answer I’m looking for.
Creating my own competition could be a strategy to consider. I’ve heard of it happening in bricks and mortar businesses. Not necessarly with an on-line business though. Am I way off track here Sean?

Hm, even so I am using trackbacks I have still not fully understood what they are.
Is the backling different to a link that I put in a blog text? Does it create more or less link love?

It’s one of those boxes I have left ticked on my Wordpress sites, but have never understood really why – just left it at the default. As an SEO point, what a valuable way to get more links into your site, but also to build community with fellow bloggers.
