by Sean Rasmussen on August 7, 2009

SEO StrategiesBlogging is a very simple and effective form of marketing your e-commerce business. In fact, it seems nearly everyone has a blog nowadays, from individuals to businesses to non-profit organisations.

Because it is quick and easy, it is a popular way to promote your company’s products or service, but the internet is getting overwhelmed with blogs and blog posts. How then can you make sure your blog posts are doing an effective job of marketing? Employing some of the SEO Strategies mentioned below will definitely be a great start!

It takes a bit of time and effort to optimise your posts. Think about what topics you can write on that will allow you to use your best keywords without obvious stuffing. Remember that you are trying to attract an audience so write in a way that is interesting and informative. Give your customers and your prospects value and you’ll undoubtedly succeed.

After the post is written, take a look through these tips to help you get the most from your blog posts.

SEO Strategies

Start with some basic SEO Strategies. Place keywords in the title of your post, as well as sprinkled throughout. Don’t forget long tail keywords. Use header tags, meta tags, and post tags; add a caption and/or alt text to any graphics, as well. Ensure your permalink structure uses the title of the post and not just the date or a post number. Add outbound links, if applicable to the text and consider linking within your blog as well as to authority sites.

Remember to use Google Analytics or other statistics software to determine what posts are most popular and what keyword searches are being used to find your posts. Adjust future content accordingly.

Social Media

Spreading the word about your blog posts is important. Once you’ve written it, you need to drive traffic to the post. There are several ways to accomplish this.

Submit the post to as many social bookmarking sites, such as Technorati, Delicious, Digg, and Stumbleupon as you can. Be sure to use appropriate tags that contain your keywords.

Advertise the post on social networking sites. Place a link on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and any other such sites you may be a member of. Don’t forget Yahoo groups or other forums where you regularly contribute and interact.

Comment on other people’s blogs. Find blogs of related content and comment on the posts; include your website URL. This works best if you can find a blog that utilises Comment Luv to provide a link to your latest post.

Encourage Blog Commenting

The more comments you get on your posts, the more popular your blog will become. This helps you gain followers and fans who will add an RSS link to your site. You get lots of inbound and outbound links, great for search engine optimisation.

You can try several different methods of encouraging visitors to start blog commenting. End the post with a question or ask for advice. Run a contest and give away a free prize to a randomly selected commenter. Write on topics that are popular and a lot of people are searching for content on.

Starting a blog is easy. Writing posts can be a bit more difficult and maintaining consistent and regular value is not easy. The rewards are definitely worthwhile, though, from: traffic, monetization, and brand management perspectives.

Incorporating the above SEO Strategies into your blogging, will ensure you have an edge over your competitors.

Have a most outstanding day.

Hi Sean,

These are all great SEO strategies. I think that optimising your posts for search engines is so important if you want those page one rankings. But, the social aspect of promoting my blog is the thing that takes me the most time.

Submitting your posts to the various bookmarking sites doesn’t take long but writing posts that people will want to share might. Also, blog commenting can take some time.

It takes some time to find blogs that genuinely interest you and that you will want to regularly read and comment on. Not to mention finding the right blogs to pick up backlinks that will help boost your rankings.

Excellent advice thanks,

I have started to implement some of the seo strategies for your blog posts tips suggested here but was wandering about adverse effects from unrelated keyword links like posting comments from high PR sites with different keywords.

If you were to link from such sites would this tell the search engines that your blog or post is less specific to your targeted theme keywords?

Just about all links are good Jeremy, but quality does count as well. Links from sites relevant to your niche will be far more beneficial than those that are not.

Hi Sean

Thankyou for this article, great information and has answered all the questions I had around blogging and submitting blogs. Using Google Analytics is an excellent link for sourcing popular posts and keyword searches.

You say to share posts to a variety of bookmarking sites but isn’t this a form of duplication? I am not really clear on this yet.

I like the thought of posting a question on my blog to attract people to comment as I find other people’s views very interesting.

I like the idea of giving away a prize for a random commentor. It may encourage more people to comment on my blog. I need to work on my social networking a bit more as well.

I always to try encourage blog commenting. One person does not have all he answers of the correct point-of-view. So it’s refreshing to get comments – whether good or not so good ;)

Also I like knowing that people are actually reading my content and are liking it enough to spend 2 minutes providing their thoughts.
