Building backlinks on a regular basis will equate to more success online. There are many ways to build valuable links as well. Here are some tips on how to build backlinks to your website:
How To Build Backlinks – 7 Strategies
1. Anchor keyword phases that you want to rank for when building links. Think about long tail keywords whenever possible as these are the phrases people who are ready to buy tend to use. And, they’re less competitive so you have a greater chance of page one rankings for major search engines for those phrases.
2. Use article directories. Directories don’t just build backlinks once but many times. Write a great article and it could be syndicated on several websites. Make sure you use your resource box / byline to its full advantage. Use anchor text links and if you’re allotted more than 2 links, use a full link at least once (rather than anchored text) in case someone publishing forgets to put the html in. That way people reading the articles will find your website!
3. Build 3-way links. Instead of just doing a reciprocal link with someone, consider making a plan as part of a link swap that includes several sites. If you have two sites called A and B and the person you’re talking to has sites called C and D, consider doing this. A links to C and D links to B instead of A and D just linking to one another. This is debatable but many believe it to be more valuable than a 2-way link, particularly if the site owners don’t have all their sites under the same hosting account.
4. Use social bookmarking. Dozens of social bookmarking tools exist that can help you build backlinks. Don’t forget to use categories, tags, review sections, and conversation starters to maximise the benefit of these sorts of sites.
5. Use various links on your blog commenting campaigns. Don’t just stick to one. Try to use deep links wherever you can. Don’t hesitate to link to specific blog posts or sales pages. Just be sure you’re a valuable contributor to conversations otherwise you’ll get caught up in the spam folder.
6. Start guest posting on other sites in your niche. Much like article directories, you can have a byline. By being linked to from a site in your niche, you can gain valuable backlinks. And, you can appeal to a new potential audience. Don’t hesitate to bookmark these posts and solicit bookmarks from people reading the posts as well!
7. Link to yourself in blog posts. If you’re someone who owns several sites, link between those sites on blog posts. Not only will that anchor text help the SEO of both sites, particularly if they’re in related niches, but this will give readers more information on a topic and could help you convert that reader into a customer.
This was not an exhaustive list of how to build backlinks. There are many other ways to increase the links pointing to your site. Those links bring you visitors and improve search engine ranking, so find ways to build links on a continuous basis and not only will you achieve success but new competition will find it difficult to surpass you in the rankings you manage to achieve.
See you at the top of Google!

Point 7 re linking my own blogs and websites – seems obvious – but have I done it? Not really, yet it makes sense for getting backlinks
I like the first point only I am not sure exactly how to do it
This is a great round-up Sean.
The beauty of building backlinks is that there are so many ways to do it. I believe that we should be employing all these techniques repeatedly in order to have a wide range of different backlinks back to our blogs.

I am glad I saw this post – as it made me go back and re-read the article – I hadn’t noted down point 3 which is something I can and ought do – build 3 way links!
If anyone wants to do this with me and my sites – just yell!
Great overview of how to build backlinks! There really are about as many ways to build backlinks as you can imagine, and one of my personal favorite is local SEO. So many local directories and citation sites (to use Place page parlance) are rife with do followed links – and they often provide a bio section where you might be able to sneak in a few h refs with optimal anchor text.
Rand wrote up a great piece on improving your local ranking with this strategy:

Hi Sean,
Nice straight forward advice. Capitalising on quality link opportunities is the name of the game – and using great anchor text is even better. Following your instructions and knowing how to build backlinks will give you an edge over your competition and help you rank faster.

I was hooked in the first few lines about using longtail keywords as anchor keyword text for less competition. Awesome! This is a great article for anyone wanting to learn how to build backlinks \m/
It’s essential reading isn’t it? And its logical when you think about it …. I mean I never just search based on one word … I use longtail phrases …. so it’s not hard to think most searchers do as well.
Another fantastic post! Thanks Sean!
Building quality backlinks sounds vitally important! I need to learn more about this.
Thanks Sean for the 7 Strategies to look at to Build Backlinks.

Thanks for the useful information about building backlinks. I have personally implemented some of these strategies and it is amazing how some good backlinks can improve your rankings. I have not tried guest posting yet or interlinking between my blogs because I have blogs on different topics, in my opinion they don’t relate to each other enough and I’m also concerned about looking like I’m voting for my own work. Should I try to find a way to link between my blogs with out being obvious or is it kind of a no go zone?

I’d love a reply to this as well because I thought the best way to link was with sites that had similar themes. Is this correct?
Cath
Yes, it is correct Cathy. It is also a service to visitors to your blog and if you send them to a link that is irrelevant to what brought them to you, it just affects your credibility.
It’s best just to link between sites with related content Bev
Learning how to build backlinks is a great article.
I like the succinct 7 strategies and have implemented some also.
I rarely try and compete for the “normal” keyword on a topic. I’d much rather use long tailed keywords and have a niche market than compete against way too many.
Cath
It is so impossible to compete with the short keywords that it becomes a necessity to go for longtails. This can be demonstrated with market samurai if you have it. Jayne went through some KWs with me the other day and it’s amazing what MS can reveal in your KW research.
Hi Sean
Building back links on my blog increases SEO and visitors. There is such a wealth of information in your posts on how to do this and this one is no exception.
Anchoring Keywords and using article directories are two ways I understand but I find the 3 way link a bit confusing still. How would I be able to keep tabs on whether those back links are coming from reputable sites as the person site that I am linked to would be linked to others?
I am grateful for all this wonderful information. Another one to book mark thank you.
Building backlinks can be somewhat time consuming, but worth the effort to regularly schedule it into your timetable. It doesn’t always mean a lot for traffic initially, but if your PR rises, it does affect your page 1 position and that means searchers are more likely to see your site as worthwhile checking out.
Backlinks seem to be a very important part of seo strategies. Thanks for giving us these 7 strategies to building backlinks they will come in handy to tick off. I especially like the idea of the 3 way link as a lot of people online have more then one site.

Thank you for your list and for your post, of course. Long tail keywords are a great way to improve search engine rankings especially of recently started blogs/websites: you can reach the first page with moderate efforts and this keeps bloggers working on and better. Unfortunately most good long-tail-keyword SERP have a high competition, too.
Bye,
Lukas
