Each search engine has its own format for determining which sites a person sees when conducting an Internet search. The Google website ranking for a page is important to every website owner because its one of the top search engines used by Internet visitors.
The higher your page ranks on Google, the easier it is for people to find and utilise your services. Increasing the rank of your website is the best way to get free traffic to your website.
Google Website Ranking – SEO Strategies
There are a number of SEO strategies that can move your site closer to the top of Google. While the algorithm for figuring out which sites rank highest is closely guarded by the powers that be at Google, there are a few tactics used by successful ranking websites that take them from the bottom of the search engine results to achieving top Google rankings.
1. Site submission. You might already know that you can submit your website to the search engines so that it can start being indexed and Google, for instance, can send its bot crawlers out to check for new content. But did you know that you could also submit an XML sitemap file?
This XML sitemap informs the search engine about all of the pages within your website. Not all pages are picked up during the crawl process, so submitting a sitemap makes Google aware of your hard to find pages, new pages, or pages that have few or no backlinks. This helps increase the Google website ranking, especially for new websites.
2. Backlinks are another important aspect of increasing page ranking. This involves getting your site linked from other sites to show the search engine that your site is reputable and worth moving up on the result’s page. When you build backlinks, it’s important to remember that you need to keyword optimise the link.
Research has shown that you may receive a higher Google website ranking by providing a link that reads “buy cheap tickets” rather than the words “click here”, this is known as anchor text.
3. SEO content involves using keyword rich articles to attract visitors and engage their interest. It’s also important that your links, tags, and titles are keyword rich. When Google crawls your website, it indexes all of the pages and determines which pages are relevant to certain keywords, making keyword optimization something to put on your high priority list.
Keep It Fresh
One of the easiest search engine optimisation strategies is to keep your website fresh. A stagnant site will eventually fall in page rank and be difficult to locate during a search. By adding content, conducting keyword research, and making sure you have plenty of backlinks, you not only attract visitors but you help improve and maintain your Google website ranking.

I learnt about the two different types of sitemaps recently via the Webvision2020 forum – one for humans (regular index page) and the other for robots (XML sitemap).
