Five Tips For Creating Inbound Links

by Sean Rasmussen on August 14, 2009

Inbound LinksLink building – the process of posting inbound links to your URL throughout the internet is a great internet marketing tool. It also helps boost search engine rankings organically.

Before you go out surfing the web and finding blogs where you can post a comment and include your website address, be aware that there are specific techniques to increase your chances of success.

Here are some tips for creating high-quality Inbound Links:

Tip #1 – Not All Links Are Created Equally

A vital component of creating a good link is deciding where to put it. We’ve all seen obvious spam sites set up purely to include keywords in content that makes no sense or to blatantly promote some product or service of questionable quality.

Is that where you want to post a link to your site? The answer is a resounding no! Not only will this have no benefit to your site, it creates an association with the spammer that major search engines do not look kindly upon. Opt for posting comments only on high quality blogs.

Tip #2 – Finding Good Quality Blogs

While blogs aren’t the only place you can build links, they are one of the easiest. And finding blogs related to specific keywords is easy.

Google blog search is a helpful tool. Input the keywords most important to your website and it will return a listing of specific blog posts that are relevant. There are other services as well such as one called Fast Blog Finder (it has a free and an upgradeable version) gives you the ranking for the domain and its pages; it also indicates whether the blog is nofollow or dofollow. The best results come from visiting the URLS with the highest rankings and those with the dofollow attribute.

Tip #3 – To Follow or Not to Follow

A “dofollow” blog is one that allows the URL you post to be a clickable link. Obviously, this is the point of building links – to get inbound traffic.

But does this mean that you should never comment on a nofollow blog? The answer is, it depends. If a domain gets a lot of traffic and has a high search engine ranking, leaving a comment there along with your site’s URL is of benefit. Search engines can still find the link and because it is coming from a high authority site, it boosts your own page ranking.

Tip #4 – Comment Posting

As previously stated, posting comments on blogs is one of the easiest, fastest ways to build Inbound Links to your site. But beware. Link building has turned into big business and many companies will pay internet marketers per link to post comments.

Because time = money, unsavoury marketers will simply try to add a blatant advertisement filled with a senseless amalgamation of keywords and phrases. If the blog’s spam filter doesn’t catch these comments before they are posted, chances are the blog owner will.

Your best opportunity for posting a comment that will not be deleted is to actually read the post and comment on it in an intelligible manner. It takes some practise to include keywords in a natural-sounding post so don’t get discouraged if your comments are flagged as spam at first.

Tip #5 – Other Inbound Link Opportunities

Besides blog commenting, you can build a number of Inbound Links in other places on the internet. Start a Squidoo lens or a HubPage, offer to create a guest post at someone else’s blog, do social bookmarking and micro-blogging, join a forum or online group that allows links, or write product reviews on comparison shopping sites and create mini websites of high quality that point to your main site.

Building inbound links to increase your site’s page ranking is time consuming, but if it is done right, you will find your website’s rank soaring within a short amount of time.

Have a most outstanding day.

Hi Sean,

These are all great tips for creating inbound links. Backlinks are like the holy grail, especially ones from authority sites in your niche with a high PageRank.

I’m still coming to terms with checking my competitor’s backlinks and going after the one’s I think will help me. Thankfully, MS makes this job a little quicker and easier.

Hi Sean

Link building, blog commenting, backlinks are all becoming clearer as I can now identify the purpose for each one thanks to joining this competition and reading so many fantastic articles.

I can really understand the importance of inbound links too and how to be selective in which links I authorise.

Google Blog search and Fast Blog Finder are two sites I have never heard of so I am going to have a look at them now because they sound amazing.

Thankyou Sean.

Another page of tips to add to my ever growing notebook of invaluable material I’ve been encountering since starting the Learn and Earn competition.

When it comes to “building inbound links” I’ve usually avoided blogs with a nofollow policy. From reading this article I see that it might be worthwhile commenting on some of these blogs and including my relevant URL in the text. I’ll have to give that a whirl.

Thanks Sean for another great post with lots of tips and valuable information.

I do understand that creating inbound links does take time, but it’s so important to get this right.

I’ve still to go down the Squidoo path. I will also take a look at Fast Blog Finder.

Hello Sean,

Great tips for Creating Inbound Links. I never thought about looking for particular blogs to comment on before now!!! I will be checking out your “Google blog search” link and thinking about dofollow or nofollow from here on in. I like to look at so many different blogs and usually take too much of my time up with reading.

So having a clear path to finding good quality blogs that will attract back links to my blog makes it all clearer.

I have a few squidoo lens but need to look at their new rules, because I had one lens about “Don Tolman” and it was a topic that is not allowed anymore on Squidoo (it attracts too much spam)….so will have to log in and check out their new guidelines. Never thought about using Squidoo for “Inbound Links”…..good idea.

Cheers
Lisa

I like the idea of making a guest post as a way to possibly receive backlinks from high profile sites. I’ll be also using Fast Blog Finder to search for blogs similar to my topic.
