Tips For Building A Loyal Customer Base

Building A Loyal Customer BaseBrand loyalty seems to be going the way of the Dodo, doesn’t it? It used to be that the vast majority of people found a brand they liked and generally stuck with it. Favourite sauces, favourite coffee, favourite car manufacturer, favourite television brand, and so on.

But today, it’s just not like that any longer – for the most part, anyway. Why? And more importantly to you, is there anything you can do to change this and start building a loyal customer base?

The Internet Has Created More Options

The age of the internet has created ultra savvy buyers. People don’t just rely on a single source all the time because they don’t always have to. The web has not only made it accessible for people who want to broaden their horizons but it has created an environment where they have lots of options.

Online Customers Are Less Forgiving

If your website is down and someone’s ready to make a purchase, there’s now a really small rate of probability that they’ll try again later. Why should they wait? There are dozens of other choices out there that have similar product lines, great pricing, and many of those sites are going to be up and running while your site is down.

And if you make an error during the order process, the customer is less likely to forgive you and buy from you again. Why should they? Unless your product is really unique and they can’t get it elsewhere, there’s no need for them to take a chance on not getting stellar customer support again. It puts internet marketers in difficult positions.

Not only do you have plenty of competition but your customers aren’t as likely to be forgiving as they would’ve been if this were ten or fifteen years ago in a bricks and mortar store.

But… You Can Still Build A Loyal Customer Base

You do have benefits, too. There are great opportunities to make money online and you don’t have to pay for a great piece of real estate in a prime location. You can make your website become a prime location by search engine optimisation and search engine marketing. What can you do to build a loyal customer base? Here are some tips:

• Wow them with excellent after sales service. That’s how they’ll remember you and that’s a big differentiator in a world of e-commerce where many of today’s consumers don’t feel loyal. If they think of you as a real company and you’re someone who provides real value, you become worthy of loyalty. Don’t treat your customers like a “number” and maybe they won’t treat you that way.

• If you make a mistake, be sure to make it right.

• Find your unique selling proposition and make it known. Are you better than your competition? You’ll need to demonstrate that to your customers on an ongoing basis.

• Work hard at getting it right on your website. Make the online shopping experience a good one, make your website fast-loading, and don’t let it go down! Work with a great webhost who has more than 99% uptime.

There are many ways to market to and to appeal to online customers. Be memorable and be easy to work with and you’ll be more likely to have a larger loyal customer base, resulting in more repeat business.

See you at the top of Google!

  1. Your tips are well done and helpful, thank you.

  2. Hi Sean,

I think you have to work at building a loyal customer base. As you say, there are a lot of options for customers out there. So, if we’re selling the same product as someone else, the only difference is us.

We need to be better at every other aspect of the selling cycle than our competitor. I think if we want loyal customers we need to be really good at building relationships and personalising our customer service, assuming of course, that we’re selling a quality product.

    Hi Sean,

Great advice as we would want to be fostering a loyal customer base while everything is right, not waiting until something goes wrong.

I have had a couple of experiences of buying a great product (training courses) and yet the people I bought them from have never bothered to follow up and I would have gladly done further workshops with them and invested in more of their products. It made me feel like I was just another sale then goodbye!

On the other hand I have made inquiries with a few businesses at times and they never stopped bombarding me with emails so I have had to unsubscribe them.

I know we all make mistakes at times, and what you said about making it right is so true.
I highly value customer service. I am loyal to people who serve me well in business, so I would like to be thought of as trustworthy, sincere and reliable too when I am in service to others.

    Blessings
    Elly
