Online Success Tips – Become A Niche Authority

by Sean Rasmussen on July 30, 2010

Demonstrating your experience and knowledge in your niche market can help you be seen as a niche authority on the topic and this could help you make more sales online.

Niche AuthorityBe careful in your quest to be seen as an expert, though. If you come across as pompous, it’s probably not going to get you very far.

Sure, there are a few internet marketing success stories where people have done very well by marketing themselves as “jerks” but this is tough to pull off. And more often than not, people who come across this way didn’t really intend to be seen this way. In most cases, they’re trying too hard to look like they’re successful.

Tips For Becoming A Niche Authority

Provide free info. Publish a report and give it away, for instance. This helps you get sign-ups to your site or newsletter and helps you demonstrate your knowledge for free, which could lead to people being more willing to pay for further information from you.

Start guest posting on authority sites or blogs. This can bring you backlinks and help you get known by a new audience.

Be a prolific content creator. Create articles, blogs, develop social marketing profiles, create web 2.0 pages, etc. More content = more attention.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

If you’re marketing yourself as an expert in your niche (which can help you get more sales), show people why you are a niche authority on your subject, rather than just calling yourself an expert. You can do this via several methods, including:

Telling your story. People like success stories and telling your story adds credibility.

Gathering and publishing testimonials. Have you helped someone? Has your product received great reviews? Ask for customer testimonials and share them. Better yet, ask people to share them publicly as reviews and kudos carry more weight when others post them rather than when you post them.

More Success Tips

Be humble. Be genuine. You don’t have to be a ‘show off’ to show that you’re a success.

Participate in charity events, stand up for a good cause, give away something valuable for free, offer giveaways.

Share your success by paying it forward.

Publicly acknowledge those that have helped you achieve success. Chances are, others will do the same for you.

Provide valuable info. Nothing screams success more than sharing. By giving away something, you’re showing others that you have a lot to give. They may wonder what else you’ve got up your sleeve and follow you, buy your product, sign up for your newsletter, etc.

Be positive and surround yourself with like minded people. The law of attraction really does work.

Treat your customers like gold. After sales service can set you apart from the crowd.

Confidence can come across and work in your favour if you go about it the right way. Applying some of the above suggestions will give you a great chance of becoming known as a niche authority and help you to achieve higher levels of online success in your chosen market.

Have a most outstanding day.

Becoming a niche authority is one of my goals, but even so I know a lot I always think that there are so many others knowing even more, so how can I be an authority? But maybe that is the right approach, as long as I value the knowledge I have.

This is a great list of tips on how to demonstrate that you are a niche authority, with the right advise – staying humble, genuine and generous.

Hi Sean,

These are all great tips that will help you become a niche authority. I think the more people you help on your quest to become a niche authority, the sooner that it will happen for you. I like humble and generous bloggers the most.

I was reading your Bullhunter blog earlier and I think Warren Buffet is exactly the kind of niche authority figure that I’d like to become.

Warren Buffet indeed! Like his niches! Coke alone would be enough! Still, it’s too late for me to make billions, so I will settle for a smaller niche and millions will do.

Hi Peter,

That sounds like a great idea. Imagine settling for millions. I still can’t get over his diet. He doesn’t like fruit and vegetables but he loves Coke. And did you see the size of his steak? It took up the whole plate. That can’t be healthy.

This is exactly why it took me so long to get started blogging, because I couldn’t find a niche I was an expert at. I felt a bit of a fraud talking about things I didn’t really know a lot about that is why I decided to focus on pregnancy, parenting and babycare. As a mum for 16 years to 3 kids I can say I have experienced a few things.

I too have procrastinated about blogging. I feel I want to get it perfect so that people accept me as that niche expert. I guess that over time you do become that expert as you will spend time absorbing everything there is to know about that niche.

I have built myself up as an authority in one of my niches – but it ain’t one where folks spend a lot of dough – because there is so much free information, people rarely need to buy! Typical bloody gardeners – whoops I’m one, and do the same thing!

Hi Sean,
Thanks for the great Online Success Tips.
Building yourself as a niche authority can take time, but many internet marketers who haven’t quite got the success they are looking for, these tips the place to start.
I know I have some way to go, but persistent effort will get the results, I’m sure.

Agree with Cade. Depending on the Niche it can take a long time for others to see you as a authority in that niche. This is made even more difficult if you are trying to establish yourself in a highly saturated niche.

I believe its all about quality over quantity. Give the readers honest, non-deceptive information and your own qualities will win them over.

If you can practice what you preach then this certainly helps to become an authority in your niche. Readers like to relate first hand to your experiences, it helps to build trust, once you have earned their trust then they will come back to your site time and time again.
