Traffic Vs Conversion Rate – What Do Your Stats Tell You

by Sean Rasmussen on February 22, 2010

Traffic Conversion RateThere is a lot of information in your numbers. Your website traffic statistics and your sales figures will tell you a lot about what you’re doing wrong and what you’re doing right.

This valuable information that’s easily extracted from your website analytics is something truly valuable and it has changed the face of marketing.

Forget guesswork. Forget expensive and often useless focus groups. You can get a full and realistic view of how you’re doing and what needs to be improved directly from the data that you can grab from any website analytics reporting software. Below are some instances:

Low Traffic – Zero Conversion

You’ve probably just begun. It’s important to look at various factors in online success. This will include: copywriting effectiveness, keyword use, search engine optimisation, search engine marketing, social media optimisation, etc. Learn all you can about these areas so you can apply that knowledge to getting traffic and convincing people to buy what you’re selling.

High Traffic – Low Conversion

You’re doing some of the right things to attract people but something is stopping them Conversion Ratefrom buying from you.

• Are you bringing them to your site under false pretences?
• Does your site not pack enough of a powerful sales punch?
• Is your pricing out of line with competitors?
• Does the product have a market?

A lot of things could be going wrong and it could take time to ascertain what’s wrong. Analysing your website statistics and looking at your content could be really helpful for you. A lot of split testing could be in your future.

Low Traffic – High Conversion

This scenario isn’t a difficult one to overcome. You’re doing the right things when people get to the site but you may need to work at more traffic strategies. Look at your SEO and SEM strategies. More organic search engine optimisation needs to happen and you can do this with alteration of your text along with your meta tags but be careful that your changes don’t suddenly cause your conversion rate to plummet because you’ve had to drastically change your text. Small steps with organic SEO may be important when you have decent click through rates.

You may also want to do more targeted advertising with a pay per click campaigns etc. Your reports demonstrate that once you get people to the page, they buy so it could be very worthwhile to buy the attention of some high quality keyword phrases.

High Traffic and High Conversion Rate

A high traffic rate and high conversion rates mean you’re doing all the right things. You’re getting traffic and you’re providing them with what they want. Not everyone can get to enjoy the benefit of these two highly coveted things. And, just because the rates are good today doesn’t mean that will be evergreen. You’ll need to continue to monitor things so you can continue to reap the rewards of online success.

Have a most outstanding day.

“Low Traffic – Zero Conversion” – I can definitely relate to this.

It is unfortunate when many who put in hours of work and follow all the white hat SEO techniques are rewarded with such minimal volumes of traffic it makes you think whether it is still worth continuing. It helps out if you are running a website on a passion or niche that you feel a connection to.

I say if you fall into this category – don’t give up!
Continue learning and applying. Trial and error if the best way to learn what works for you and your website.

Sound advice there Cemil, giving up is not an option. Rather than giving up, why not try to find the reason the results are less than you expected… have you given it enough time? are your keywords too competitive? is your SEO spot on? are you using social media to attract traffic? is your content appealing?

Hi Sean,

I’m still in the “Low Traffic – Zero Conversion” phase. In the beginning the keywords I chose were wrong. They just weren’t targeted and didn’t attract the traffic I wanted.

So, I’m starting over and re-working my keywords. Hopefully that will push me into the “High Traffic – High Conversion” phase.

Hi Sean,

I think it’s safe to say that a high traffic and high conversion rate is what we are all striving to achieve & when you look at with the key tips from this post in mind it will be a lot easier to get there.

I am still experiencing low traffic & low conversion rates with my current internet marketing efforts but will continue to persevere until I learn how to put this all together!

At this time I am in the no traffic zone but this is really good information for me as I will know exactly where to come for information if my traffic is too slow.

Thankyou

Once you start getting traffic it is really exciting because you can see what works, what doesn’t & what you do to experiment for increasing conversions : )

Hi Jeremy,

It’s really exciting when you start getting traffic and it’s not just your Mum anymore. I love it when Google starts to send me natural traffic and on the odd occasion, when it’s one of my keywords, I’m really excited.

You’re right though. You can experiment a whole lot more.

After learning from you Sean, my traffic rate is slowly moving up but still not exciting enough to write home about, and I have definately still have low conversion so my copywriting skills can definately be improved upon. I am getting better though as time goes by and hopefully before too long I will have high traffic and high conversion.
