In an internet marketing business with multiple levels, your downline and how they perform directly contributes to the amount of money you can make. But simply establishing a roster of dependable people in your organisation is not enough to ensure you make money.
You’ll do better if you support and encourage them and help them to close sales so that everyone makes a profit. It really comes down to two basic principles that apply to any business in sales: leads and conversions.
Most of the people in your down line will not be experienced salespersons. Even after you manage to attract them to your MLM business and give them the proper tools, most are going to need a bit of help getting leads and then converting those leads into affiliates. Simply expecting your downline to pick up the phone and start making cold calls is not realistic. Consider teaching them both active and passive methods of closing a sale.
Actively Closing The Lead
In order to close a lead on a prospect for your network marketing business, you need to overcome any possible objections, appeal to their emotions, and clinch the deal by actively moving the prospect toward a decision to join your organisation. Teach your downline to capitalise on as much of their traffic as possible. Show them how to do this. Perhaps your programme has materials that are ready for affiliates to use. Be sure they know how to best utilise what’s available. Providing additional materials could also be well worth your effort.
Active closing can be a daunting task for someone who is inexperienced. It requires establishing a relationship, learning to look for the cues that signal objections, and then urging the lead to take action, and do it immediately. Once the prospect leaves the immediate conversation, chances are slim to none that they will ever take action.
In online marketing, there are tools and techniques that can help with this such as squeeze pages, free trials, and bonuses. It takes time to learn about the tools that make the top earners successful but if you have a downline it’s in your best interests to mentor and lead them in the right direction.
Passively Closing The Lead
With passive closing, you allow qualified prospects to take action on their own. This can be accomplished by first creating a page that effectively captures leads that will result in a high conversion rate.
If you work to ensure that the downline has all the tools in place that they need, all they need to do is drive traffic and the leads will close themselves after a bit of simple follow-up.
Making money in a network marketing business or when you want to create a successful sales force for your information product is all about time and money. The more support you give your downline, the more profitable a venture it can be.

Hi Sean,
Is this post more for a network marketing business? I guess there are some similarities between a MLM business and an internet marketing business. I think a MLM business requires a more aggressive sales approach than an internet marketing one.
Am I right in assuming that an internet marketing business requires more of a passive approach? I guess that some people go after their sales aggressively but that’s a choice.
I see that you wrote this post in September, 2009. Does this mean that you think MLM businesses are a good idea?

I think being able to sell, having the confidence to sell and knowing how to close a sale are all advanced skills.
I could say without question that I don’t enjoy selling directly however I do enjoy internet marketing strategies. I think it is also pleasing that someone can come into your blog and ‘shop around’ uninterrupted whenever they want because that is how I like to shop.
I also like to encourage and motivate people so like to be in lead teams. All this interaction with people can still happen in social sites and Facebook
