When you think of internet marketing, what important skills come to mind? If you are thinking in terms of traditional marketing and advertising, you might consider that creativity and business savvy are two vital components. That does not address all of the different techniques that are used to successfully market an e-commerce company.
Because internet marketing is accomplished with little, if any, personal face-to-face contact, it requires some additional skills you might not have considered important.
Do you have the necessary Internet Marketing Skills to become successful? Review this short list of personality traits and skills to find out.
1. The Creative Side
Creativity is always important, no matter the type of business or the type of marketing.
Internet Marketing requires that you do a lot of writing: web pages, articles, blog posts, sales letters, newsletters, e-mail messages, and more. Not only do you need to write content, but you need to be creative, write in a grammatically correct and easily understandable style, and catch the attention of web surfers.
Creativity is also part of good SEO. There must be certain elements in your website in order to optimise it, but how you incorporate those elements is an exercise in creativity. Overall design of your pages, making them user-friendly, easily navigable, and aesthetically pleasing is important as well.
Video and audio content are good for website optimisation as well. The more creative you are in making pieces that are interesting, or even humorous, the more they will help your marketing efforts.
Link building may not sound like a creative activity, but it is. You need to learn how to post blog comments that are accepted by a moderator.
2. The Technical Side
You do not necessarily have to be a computer nerd to accomplish marketing on the internet, but you do need a good grasp of the general principles that affect SEO and an understanding of writing code.
Knowing how to create an exit pop-up, start a pay per click campaign, develop a banner ad, or write a robots.txt file are all important skills. These can be learned, especially with how user-friendly the web and technology are today, so don’t dismay if you don’t know how to install a WordPress blog. You can learn!
Internet marketers must know how to properly use search engines to find the information they need. Researching keywords, looking up competitors’ websites, finding a niche, learning the latest optimisation techniques, and projecting the viability of your company offerings are all tasks that are accomplished with a search of the internet.
3. The Personality Side
You may not spend a lot of time talking to people in person when you are marketing your business online, written words take the place of conversation. When you use social media to help drive traffic and sales, your personality has to shine through your comments and attract followers.
No business can be successful without considering customer service. Millions of websites sell various things, but only one company can offer exceptional service – yours. It is your personal attention to providing service that makes your business different from all the rest.
Your website also reflects your personality. If you have a good sense of humour, then your pages should include whimsical design, an easygoing attitude, and amusing content that reflects you and lets people get to know you.
Internet marketing is not just performing cut and dried tasks. It involves a well-rounded mix of creative, technical, and personal skills to be truly effective. If any of these elements are currently missing from your online business, it’s never too late to add to your Internet Marketing Skills.
See you at the top of Google!

Hi Sean,
These internet marketing skills are really interesting. I have a lot of trouble getting my sense of humour or my personality to come across in my blog posts. I was talking to someone the other day about this.
Their suggestion was that there is more than one medium available. I don’t just have to write my posts. Maybe it’s time to try something else. Now I just have to get out of my comfort zone.
You definitely need to be able to be versatile if you want to be an internet marketer. Or, willing to learn new skills to keep moving forward.

Internet marketing requires you to sell yourself as well as your products. Possibly the hardest part is the selling of yourself. Seeing as people won’t normally be meeting you face-to-face, you will have to rely on your communications skills. Fortunately, on today’s Internet that includes audio and video as well as the written word. If you find your creativity more aligned with audio or video than with writing, then use the Internet Marketing Skills that you possess and consider delivering your message using audio or video. These technologies may actually make it easier for your potential clients to relate to your personality.

Hi Sean’
What a great article this is!. It is really valuable for me to understand the techie side of things as I don’t yet know how to install an exit pop up, start a ppc campaign nor do I know what a robot txt file. However, I do know that I need to learn about them now.
One of the major things I learned in the YOTA forum is that it is really important to write good content in your blog. Because of the monthly article challenges in the forum, writing is encouraged and when you submit an article, the moderators and others in the forum give great feedback as to how you can make improvements and where you are getting it right.
Because of the writing challenges I began to really enjoy writing, a skill I am constantly striving to improve every day.
Researching Keywords is another area I wish to gain expertise in as I realise that to even start creating a blog, one needs to get the keywords in the blog title optimised for search engines.
Thankyou Sean.
Blessings,
Elly
