The difference between broad internet marketing and niche internet marketing is largely the ability to find success online. Much like fishing, if you cast too wide a net, you will get a big mix of fish – some you want and some you don’t. With a smaller net, you can target the exact type of fish you want. In internet marketing terms, these are your prospects; the visitors most likely to convert into customers.
So how do you find the best Internet Marketing Niche for your online business? There are three basic factors to take into consideration. These are personal passion, popularity, and lack of competition. Let’s take a more in-depth look at each.
Internet Marketing Niches – Choose Your Passion
Have you ever had a job that you simply could not stand? A job that you hated to go to each morning, a job where you dreaded walking through the door? Obviously, this was not the occupation for you.
The same thing holds true for your e-commerce venture. Unless you have a real passion for what you do, it will quickly get old and you will find it difficult to maintain a level of enthusiasm required to make it successful. So rule number one is to follow and monetise your passion and it won’t seem like a chore. You might like all sports, but if you truly have a passion for rugby, then focus on that and drill it down to a specific niche.
Niche Popularity
No online business will be successful if there are no potential customers for the products or services you are selling. Your Internet Marketing Niche should be very specific, but if it focuses on something others have no interest in, this niche is not going to make money.
Maybe you are really passionate about collecting socks basketball players have worn. But is anyone else interested in that? Without a built-in market for your niche, it is a waste of time, effort, and money.
Niche Competition
Consider the other side of the coin. If you choose an internet marketing niche that is widely popular, the amount of competitors rises dramatically. This is no good either. Entering an over-saturated niche market is difficult, if not impossible, to make a profit.
The trick is to capitalise on a popular subject, but fill a need that no one else is currently focusing on. For example, rugby is a very broad subject. Lots of people are interested in playing the game, watching it, and even betting on the outcome. They are passionate about their favourite national team or player, but all of those markets are already being served.
The best way to compete and make a profit is to perform some niche research and try to find a much narrower niche. Maybe you can report the game statistics from an up and coming local team that is not yet receiving much coverage. Perhaps your business could target female fans, a largely under-served market, by offering women’s sizes of fan clothing or stuffed animals with the most popular players’ number and team colours.
These tips should give you some good ideas about how to find the perfect Internet Marketing Niche. Remember that you need to satisfy your passion, find a product that is popular, and target an under-served market.
See you at the top of Google!

Hi Sean,
It’s not easy choosing an internet marketing niche. You’ve got to get a balance between following your passion and finding a niche that’s profitable.
Also, you need to build a blog around something you love. It takes a lot of effort and hours of dedication and perseverance to get a blog going and keep it moving. If you don’t choose something you’re passionate about, I think it will really make it hard to sustain the effort you will need.
Ultimately though, I think it all comes down to doing your research to ensure you choose the right niche in the beginning.

At first I found it really hard to choose my internet marketing niche but through a process of
mind mapping I finally realised what I could specialise in.
Now I need to do some niche research to find out the best way to promote my sites.
It is very tricky to choose an internet marketing niche that is popular but not so popular that the competition is too high as well as something you are passionate about. You really have to brainstorm and research your topic before embarking on the journey of trying to make money from it.
