Three Tips For Attracting Targeted Traffic

by Sean Rasmussen on August 15, 2009

Targeted TrafficGetting traffic to your ecommerce site is one thing, getting Targeted Traffic is another.

What’s the difference? Scores of visitors who come across your site and pause there briefly with no intent, or need, to buy your products can be considered unqualified traffic. They may increase your page ranking, but they do not help your bottom line.

Visitors who come to your site with a specific need and intent are qualified; they are the most likely to convert from someone with an interest to an actual customer.

In order for your business to benefit from the most conversions, you need to drive Targeted Traffic to your website. There are several ways to do this as outlined below.

Targeted Traffic Using SEO

The first thing you have to do is define not only your goals, but to define your target market. If the ultimate goal in your ecommerce enterprise is to increase sales on your most profitable products, then break that down into steps: attract qualified visitors, have them click on a buy link, then clinch the sale.

Who are those targeted visitors? What is their age, income level, place of residence, hobbies, etc.? First you have to know who they are before you can develop SEO techniques that target just these people.

When you’ve got that figured out, it becomes much easier to determine SEO for your site. Provide accurate information for search engines. Research the best keywords – those that are not too broad nor too narrow.

Provide a clear solution to your target market’s problems in all of your content and ensure that visitors see it immediately. And finally, make it easy for search engines to find your site and accurately list it to inquiring web surfers.

Syndication

In speaking of internet marketing terms, syndication refers to an RSS feed, or similar type of technology feed for your site’s content. According to Wikipedia, “content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it”. In other words, syndication is a way of spreading the news, internet-style.

There are several ways to syndicate your content. Post a how-to video on a popular sharing site such as YouTube with a link to your ecommerce site. You could also post a short webinar or expert interview as either video or audio content.

Web 2.0 pages, like those on Squidoo or HubPages, are another way to spread links to your content across the internet and show your authority on a particular subject.

Remember to use social bookmarking as another form of syndication. Digg, Technorati, Del.icio.us, Furl, and others all offer easy ways of sharing your content. Make sure the headlines and short description you input for each blog post will entice readers to click on the link.

Pay Per Click Campaign

It’s not free, but a PPC campaign can do wonders for driving Targeted Traffic to your site. You create an ad that appears when certain keywords and phrases are entered in one of the major search engines, with a link to a particular landing page with a call to action. Each time someone clicks on your ad, you pay.

If you are going to spend your online marketing and advertising dollars somewhere, this is the one area where they will be most effective and provide a proven increase to your sales.

Just because you are getting lots of traffic to your site does not mean visitors are buying your products or services. You have to define the demographics of your target market and then go after them specifically. Practice good SEO, spread the word virally about your business, and start a pay per click campaign to start seeing your visitors convert to customers.

Have a most outstanding day.

Hi Sean,

This is another area where I haven’t spent enough time defining my target market. I thought I had chosen one but it’s way too broad. I’m starting to feel like a slow learner.

On the positive side though, I’m seeing where I am making my mistakes. Hopefully, I’ll be able to improve quickly from here. So, like the post before, is there anything I can do apart from re-working my keywords?

Hello Jazz,

I hope I will not be treading on anyones toes, or being too forward by replying to your question…..”So, like the post before, is there anything I can do apart from re-working my keywords?” :)

I clicked on your link for your blog and love the outlook/and what it is all about. I also think you answered your question with “I thought I had chosen one but it’s way too broad”….You are amazing with words, and the youtube clip is brilliant. Once you have found your “Passion” for your blog and narrow it down to what you are passionate about and use the skills you have – watch out Internet world – for Jazz is going to make it within a “Niche”.

I too had trouble with a niche industry(niche market) but have taken the time to explore what I am passionate about, and when you do find your market (your theme) it will all fall into place.

Hope that helps :)

Cheers
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at my blog. I really appreciate your feedback. You’re right, I need to explore my passion a little more and use it to help me drill down to find the niche I’m looking for.

I’m still learning to express my passion in a post. I’m totally envious of people who have that ability. Hopefully, it’s something I will improve on. Thank-you for your advice and your kinds words.

Finding your passion is something which held me back from taking action. I didn’t want to start without working out what I am really passionate about. I still really haven’t found it which I use to be a little embarrassed about, but after talking to people there is a lot of others who also haven’t found a passion.

Hi Sean

I can see how important it is to define your target market but getting traffic is lots of work initially especially when being actively involved on the social sites as it takes quite a chunk of time.

I do like the idea of posting a how to video onto Youtube. I have been toying with that thought for a while now plus social bookmarking which I understand is a must.

These are great ideas here Sean and I will revisit this page when I get back to my blogging.

I familiar with most of the items outlined in this article with the exception of Squidoo and Hubpages. I just had a quick look at them and will obviously have to spend more time there to see how to effective use them as a tool for “attracting targeted traffic.”

Targeting traffic is so important.
Put up as many sites as you can handle and link them.
Squidoo pages are free..
Social media is an ever expanding arena with each of those having thousands of followers..
Think of an octopus with social media, their tentacles reach far and wide….

Hello Sean,

Great tips and points about how to Attract Targeted Traffic for a website/blog. I really like the idea of videos, and believe that in the next 12 months or so Australia is going to explode with using YouTube as a means to drive traffic to sites. America is big on speaking and connecting with their customers via Media, and I can see that others are going to catch on.

Its all about “Smarter” ways to attract traffic that will stay on the site, and click on the links that helps to make using the internet worth while.

David and I have been talking about using video to show “How to….” with our new idea, and will be looking into in the near future.

Cheers

Hi Sean,
I had not thought before reading this article that it’s best to attract qualified visitors.

I learn that I need to research keywords. I’m aware that using SEO will increase traffic, using RSS feeds will increase traffic. Using Social Media helps my blog to go viral. Running a PPC campaign is another thing to think about. I have many options to help with advertising.

To attract targeted traffic is a skill which I need to work on. I found I was confusing people with my blog posts before I started on one niche and they would arrive at my site and wouldn’t have a clue what it was about. Now I hope I target people wanting to know a little more about the keywords I write about.
