Three Tips For Attracting Targeted Traffic

by Sean Rasmussen on August 15, 2009

Targeted TrafficGetting traffic to your ecommerce site is one thing, getting Targeted Traffic is another.

What’s the difference? Scores of visitors who come across your site and pause there briefly with no intent, or need, to buy your products can be considered unqualified traffic. They may increase your page ranking, but they do not help your bottom line.

Visitors who come to your site with a specific need and intent are qualified; they are the most likely to convert from someone with an interest to an actual customer.

In order for your business to benefit from the most conversions, you need to drive Targeted Traffic to your website. There are several ways to do this as outlined below.

Targeted Traffic Using SEO

The first thing you have to do is define not only your goals, but to define your target market. If the ultimate goal in your ecommerce enterprise is to increase sales on your most profitable products, then break that down into steps: attract qualified visitors, have them click on a buy link, then clinch the sale.

Who are those targeted visitors? What is their age, income level, place of residence, hobbies, etc.? First you have to know who they are before you can develop SEO techniques that target just these people.

When you’ve got that figured out, it becomes much easier to determine SEO for your site. Provide accurate information for search engines. Research the best keywords – those that are not too broad nor too narrow.

Provide a clear solution to your target market’s problems in all of your content and ensure that visitors see it immediately. And finally, make it easy for search engines to find your site and accurately list it to inquiring web surfers.

Syndication

In speaking of internet marketing terms, syndication refers to an RSS feed, or similar type of technology feed for your site’s content. According to Wikipedia, “content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it”. In other words, syndication is a way of spreading the news, internet-style.

There are several ways to syndicate your content. Post a how-to video on a popular sharing site such as YouTube with a link to your ecommerce site. You could also post a short webinar or expert interview as either video or audio content.

Web 2.0 pages, like those on Squidoo or HubPages, are another way to spread links to your content across the internet and show your authority on a particular subject.

Remember to use social bookmarking as another form of syndication. Digg, Technorati, Del.icio.us, Furl, and others all offer easy ways of sharing your content. Make sure the headlines and short description you input for each blog post will entice readers to click on the link.

Pay Per Click Campaign

It’s not free, but a PPC campaign can do wonders for driving Targeted Traffic to your site. You create an ad that appears when certain keywords and phrases are entered in one of the major search engines, with a link to a particular landing page with a call to action. Each time someone clicks on your ad, you pay.

If you are going to spend your online marketing and advertising dollars somewhere, this is the one area where they will be most effective and provide a proven increase to your sales.

Just because you are getting lots of traffic to your site does not mean visitors are buying your products or services. You have to define the demographics of your target market and then go after them specifically. Practice good SEO, spread the word virally about your business, and start a pay per click campaign to start seeing your visitors convert to customers.

Have a most outstanding day.
