I think lots of people start with free blog sites and then progress to self hosted sites. I think its a great idea to use these sites as links to your paid site although as you mentioned, they can sometimes be a little limiting.

I’ve used a few of the free blog sites like blogger, wordpress & squidoo and have found them to be great for generating traffic & gaining good keyword optimized backlinks as well.

Try before you buy is a great way of putting it Don. It’s also good to try things without outlaying too much money, just so you know whether it’s something you enjoy and want to continue with in the future

No matter what your intentions are for your first blog or two, free blogs are the way to go. This allows you to get your feet wet without cost. Using a free blog will give you a chance to experiment on someone else’s dime. Once you feel comfortable with the whole idea of blogging and feel you have the stamina and drive to keep the blog current then you can consider investing in a domain name and paying for a self-hosted blog. The old ‘try before you buy’ approach.
