Are Free Blogs Worth The Effort

by Sean Rasmussen on November 9, 2009

Free BlogsA lot of people know that the best way to monetize a site is to own it yourself. By buying your own domain name and hosting your own site, you’ll have full editorial control, full advertising control, and you’ll earn 100% of the profit. But does it also make sense at times to make use of Free Blogs and websites? Absolutely!

Every site that will let you post content and links to it creates better earning potential for you, more exposure, and has the potential to improve your search engine optimisation for the sites you do own. Free blogs = free marketing.

From a search engine perspective, blogs are great. They are interactive and point to and from other websites. When you point to your blogs from your Web 2.0 pages and article directories, and you point to your own websites from these pages as well, you can improve your rankings in the search engines substantially.

Blogger Blogs

Blogger offers free accounts with plenty of customisation options. You can add virtually any advertising program you like so as these Free Blogs point people to other sites of yours as valuable backlink generators, they can earn you money while they do it.

WordPress Blogs

Free WordPress blogs don’t allow outright advertising but you can start these sites for free and use them to direct people to your other sites. People are directed and search engines are directed as well. By properly optimising a free blog, you can definitely help the overall optimisation of your other websites as well as drive targeted traffic to landing pages and online stores.

Other Blogs

The more links that point to your website the better. Use blogs to do that. Many free blogs exist on busy communities so not only can you use them as part of your linking strategy, but you can use them to drive traffic as well. Blogging communities often have great rankings, plenty of traffic and many promote popular posts and bloggers to the front page. And on blogging communities, members tend to be very supportive of their fellow bloggers and will often help your content go viral as well.

Don’t Be A Splogger

A splog is a spam blog. You don’t want to do that! Put solid posts, valuable information, and take time to optimise your Free Blogs and they’ll be much more valuable to you!

Have a most outstanding day.

Free blogs are a great place to start and you can always create your own blogs further down the track – if you want to. Good advice about not being a splogger – hadn’t heard of that term before! Thanks Sean.

There are plenty of sploggers around Jan. The best way to deal with them is to put a link back to your site within the first paragraph, that way at least you get the benefit of the link when the splogger publishes your article ;-)

I appreciate having learned so much from you. It feels good being able to point those who try so hard and get no where in the right direction.

Free blog sites are also a great way to build links to primary sites and to post articles and other content on to link back to original sites as well. If you did start with free blogs and then moved on to a hosted site, do not be so quick to disregard your free stuff or to let them die as they can still be valuable tools in your marketing campaign for your pay sites or hosted sites … especially when they have been up for a couple of years or more. Never underestimate the value of free in any relationship even if it is only different aspects of your business.

Hi Ward
I totally agree that free blogs are very beneficial, particularly for link building purposes. I have written an article on free blogs for those people who are not quite sure of the benefits.
