Many companies now offer Affiliate Marketing Programs as a way to increase their sales and give the owner of any blog or website a way of making money. In fact, these days you can find affiliate opportunities available with any variety of goods or services providers – some you may be very surprised about.
With so many options, what should you consider when selecting one or more for your website? We’ve compiled some tips to help you in this regard.
Who’s Visiting Your Website?
Just as it is the key to effective online marketing in general, knowing the demographics of your website’s visitors is important in determining the best affiliate programs to participate in.
You may be able to determine a few key factors based on your content. For example, if you like reading romance novels and post reviews and host a forum dedicated to this topic, then visitors to your site are much more likely to be females, avid readers, and in the age range of 25 to 45 or so.
Next, check your website analytics. Most stat tracking software at least provides you with a list of keyword searches, internet host, and popular pages. Are you getting hits more often from referral sites, or search engines? Take a look at all of the available statistics with an eye towards painting a picture of your most frequent visitors.
Affiliate Marketing Products And Services
Are the keywords being used in searches to bring online traffic to your site relevant to your content? If not, use this to your advantage. Consider an Affiliate Marketing Program that provides something to meet the needs of these ‘accidental’ visitors. As long as traffic is coming in, why not provide them with what they are actually seeking?
On the other hand, if your site is already a comprehensive resource for products or services you sell, then becoming an affiliate with a company that provides the same items is probably not going to do you any good. Plus, you don’t want to drive your customers away to an alternate vendor.
The same principle applies with affiliate marketing programs your competitors participate in. Don’t choose the same ones. There’s no sense going up against stiff competition and providing the same things your visitors can find elsewhere.
Affiliate Ranking Searches
There are affiliate ranking websites that provide tools to help you find programs. You might input keywords and get a list of programs available with details. You can also just scroll through the directory and see if you get some ideas.
Spend some time doing research. The better and more relevant your choice of affiliate marketing program, the greater your chance for success. Take a thorough look at the specifics of each program and do a side-by-side comparison, if possible. Why spend the time setting up your site with banners and links and SEO if the company’s offerings are not a good fit?
Affiliate Marketing Programs are a great way to monetise your website. Just be sure to choose the right ones in order to enjoy the greatest success. Some areas to consider include – minimum payment threshold, other terms and conditions, a quick search to see if anyone is complaining about that company, and looking at the affiliate tools and resources provided to support those trying to promote for them.
See you at the top of Google!

Hi Sean,
Some useful tips for choosing affiliate programs in this article.
Researching visitors is an important process when deciding on what product is best to sell, then more research is necessary to know if I have made the right choice.
Good news in this article that the demand for affiliates is increasing.
Hi Sean,
Thanks for the great tips for choosing affiliate marketing programs. I think one of the mistakes I have been making is that my keywords aren’t niche enough so I’m not getting targeted traffic. At least, I’m not getting the kind of traffic that will be interested in my affiliate products.
For instance, if I put my site in the Google keyword tool, it gives me a list of keywords. The keywords do reflect what I want my site to be about but they’re not the right ones to drive traffic that will buy my products.
So, I think I need to re-think my keywords and choose ones that people will actually use if they want to buy my affiliate product. At least, that’s what I think I have to do.

Hi Sean
There are many affiliate programs around now and I think this article is a very good checklist for making a decision as to the type of affiliate products to have on my site.
I need to look at the demographics of who is actually visiting my site and making sure that my product is relevant to the content on my site and age/sex of the visitors.
I will also have to check out the online afflilate programs in detail in accordance with your guidelines and also see if the product has been given good feedback, and the affiliate agreement is fair.

A great set of guidelines “for choosing affiliate marketing programs”. As most things related to marketing a lot boils down to the research you’re prepared to do before making your choices. The nice thing about the Internet is that a lot of the tools are easily available to do that research.
